Formation Year 26-27For Families K-6The Reality
Our parish is already walking with hundreds of children, teens, adults, and families through formation, sacramental preparation, OCIA, youth ministry, Catholic school, homeschool families, and parish life.
At the same time, formation is often experienced through separate programs that function independently. Families may not know one another across sites, children receive the sacraments without remaining connected to parish life, and catechists are often left managing exceptions, late entries, missed sign-ups, and different formation paths.
The deeper question is not simply,
“How do we prepare children for sacraments?”
The deeper question is:
How do we help families live the Catholic faith within the life of the parish?
The Vision
This model moves the parish from disconnected programs toward one shared formation rhythm rooted in the life of the Church.
Rather than formation being centered on a weekly classroom model, families would gather throughout the year for parish formation experiences shaped by the liturgical calendar, the sacraments, and the call to discipleship.
The goal is to help build up the domestic church—not by adding another commitment, program, or box to check, but through real and practical encounters with Jesus in the sacraments, in prayer, in the home, and in one another.
The Basic Model
Families with children in K–6th grade would participate in a shared parish formation journey that includes:- Seven monthly family gatherings during the school year
- Age-appropriate catechesis for children
- Parent formation and discussion
- Shared family practices that can be lived at home
- Moments of encounter through prayer, Adoration, Reconciliation, service, or Mass
- Two parish retreats connected to sacramental preparation
- A Catholic summer camp / VBS experience to deepen friendship, prayer, and formation

Sacramental Preparation
Following diocesan guidance, sacramental preparation will begin in second grade or around age 7 and continue over two years.- Second Grade: preparation and celebration of First Reconciliation
- Third Grade: Confirmation and First Holy Communion
This includes participation in family gatherings, retreats, Catholic summer camp, and at least one meeting with the pastor or his appointed delegate. Pastors retain final discernment of readiness for the sacraments.
Families today are formed by many competing rhythms: school, work, sports, activities, and the demands of daily life. Many of these things are good, but they cannot lead our children—or ourselves—to eternal life.
The Church cannot simply compete by offering one more program. Instead, the parish must create space where families encounter Christ, practice the faith together, and come to know one another as one body in Christ.
This is not about doing more.
It is about forming people more deeply.
What Success Looks Like
Success is not simply attendance or sacramental completion.
Success looks like:- families praying together at home
- children recognizing one another at Mass
- parents supporting one another in faith
- parishioners growing in relationship across communities
- sacraments understood as milestones of discipleship, not graduation
- families being nourished, sheltered, healed, and sent into the world as witnesses of hope
The Goal
This proposal is a practical response to a parish that continues to grow and draw in more people seeking Christ.
The goal is to help form families and individuals who do not simply attend parish life, but belong to it—encountering Jesus in the sacraments, living the faith at home, and being sent into the world as missionary disciples.
